Residents of Wire and Cable – Orisumbare-Ire-Akari-Ita Faaji – Olohan-Abule-Owo-Fenwa and environs, have decried the poor state of the major road that connects the communities to the Old Abeokuta-Ibadan Expressway. House owners, tenants, commercial motorcycle riders and traders trooped out en masse on Saturday, 21st June, 2025 at 7am, to protest the negligence of government to the plight of the people.
The residents expressed sadness over the recurring neglect of Wire and Cable-Ita Faaji-Olohan road, stressing that various administrations, including the present Seyi Makinde-Led government, had promised to construct the road but nothing had been done. According to the residents, “Wire and Cable road has become a death trap. We can no longer use our vehicles. Our children can’t afford to go to school on bikes without getting injured due to the deplorable condition of the road”.
A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said the various associations of landlords and landladies across the over 20 communities, had written to the present government regarding the urgent need to fix the road with no action taken till date. Another resident, a woman, expressed deep sadness over the road, saying she had lost count of the number of times herself and her children had fallen off bikes, with severe injuries, owing to the poor condition of the road.
A quick tour of the road truly revealed its devastating state, as it has become impossible for cars, tricycles and heavy-duty vehicles to ply. The poor state of Wire and Cable road has continued to take its toll on commercial activities, as transportation fares are being increased regardless of the pump price of petrol in the country. Traders also complained of inaccessibility to the main road and high fares, all attributed to the growing deplorable state of the road.
All residents of Wire and Cable and its environs, therefore used the protest to appeal to the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to come to their rescue by constructing the road for safety of lives and properties and improved living condition for the people. Wire and Cable-Orisumbare-Ire-Akari-Ita Faaji and environs are communities in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State.
